Refrigerator Checklist - Simple things you can do to keep your fridge in good order.

A refrigerator is quite often one of the most used and abused items in the house. These appliances run 24 hours per day, seven days per week with little to no attention until something goes wrong.

With a couple of minutes of effort every month it can help to extend the life of your fridge and keep it running at optimum performance.

  1. Clean Condenser - The condenser is the black pipes that are located on the rear or underneath the refrigerator. Vacuum any dust, fluff, or pet hair off these coils. In the summer months the refrigerator will struggle to cool if the condenser is blocked with dust. On many modern refrigerators the condenser is built inside the rear panel to give a smooth, streamlined look. You will not have to attend to this item if you have a consealed condenser.

  2. Clean Seals - Use an old toothbrush and some white vinegar to clean any mould from the grooves in the door gasket. If any juice, wine or soda is spilt on the seal or the face of the refrigerator clean it off straight away with warm soapy water. The leading cause of damage to door gaskets is tearing caused through sticky fluids being spilt on the seal.

  3. Polish Cabinet - When you care for the paintwork on your car it helps to prevent rust. It is the same with your refrigerator, at least twice a year clean the cabinet with warm soapy water and then rub the paint work with car polish this will help to prevent rust from forming. I have noticed on many refrigerators that rust forms under fridge magnets. I not sure of the exact reason behind this but I am guessing that condensation gets trapped under the magnet which accelerates rust.

  4. Replace filter - If your refrigerator dispenses ice and water the water filter should be replaced every 6 to 12 months depending on the amount of water used. If replacement is left longer than this period there is a risk of bacteria building up in filter or the filter becoming blocked. There are various shapes and sizes of filters to suit the different brands of refrigerator. If you are searching for a filter to suit your fridge head over to www.appliance-repair-parts.com.au .
